The Canvey Island Pride in Place Board has agreed a major investment to support the transformation of Canvey Lake, approving £500,000 in match funding towards environmental improvements.
The decision, taken at the Board’s latest meeting, will see the Board match Castle Point Borough Council’s existing £500,000 pledge towards essential desilting (dredging) works at the Lake which is an important step in improving water quality.
In addition, the Board has agreed to fund a £25,000 programme to support education and community engagement, helping residents, schools and visitors better understand the Lake, its wildlife and how they can play a role in its long-term care.
Canvey Lake is a key priority within the Canvey Island Regeneration Plan, with local people consistently highlighting the importance of improving green spaces and protecting the lake for future generations.
Steve Bish,Chair of the Canvey Island Pride in Place Board, said: “Residents have been clear that they want to see real improvements at Canvey Lake and by committing £500,000 in match funding we are ensuring this vital work can move forward at pace.
“By pairing environmental improvements with education and engagement, we are not only restoring the lake but building a stronger connection between the community and one of Canvey’s most valued green spaces.”
Cllr Dave Blackwell, Leader of Castle Point Borough Council said: “We welcome the Pride in Place Board’s commitment to match our £500,000 investment in Canvey Lake bringing the total to £1 million. This partnership approach ensures we can deliver the large-scale improvements needed to tackle long-standing water quality issues and unlock the Lake’s full potential.”
The combined £1 million investment will enable targeted desilting works alongside ongoing water quality improvements already being led by the Council.
The education and engagement programme will begin in 2026/27, working with local schools, community groups and environmental partners to support long-term behavioural change and community stewardship of the lake.
